Vowess

Vowess
A woman who took a vow of chastity. Usually, such women were widows; however sometimes such a vow was taken within a marriage. One part of the vow was thereafter to wear plain, modest clothes, long and black to conceal her shape, as well as hands and feet. (These resembled nuns' habits.)
